Greta Thunberg: The Eco Warrior of our Generation

Greta Thunberg: The Eco Warrior of our Generation

She shows us just what one individual can do.

As huge climate strikes take place today all over the world, let's take a look at the young woman who started it all. Greta Thunberg is inspiring a generation – a generation that is waking up to just how much previous generations have let them down. But this is not just a generational issue. People of all ages are inspired by this Swedish school girl and activist, who is showing us what just one individual can do.

Greta Thunberg Stepped Up Solo
In our warming and increasingly dangerous world, it is easy to become overwhelmed. It is easy to wonder what we, as individuals, can do to combat the unprecedented existential threats that we face. When Greta Thunberg began her solo protest outside the Swedish Parliament aged just 15, little did she imagine just how much she could go on to achieve.

Her bravery in striking from school and quiet dedication became the global Fridays for Future Movement. What began with just one teenaged girl spread to encompass young people from 150 countries, and thousands of other people around the world. With her simple, straightforward fight to raise awareness,

Greta Thunberg shows us what just one person can achieve.

As she has said, 'you are never too small to make a difference'. Once the girl at the back of the class who did not say anything, Greta Thunberg is now one of the world's most influential teens according to Time magazine. She was nominated for France's Freedom Prize, and won Germany's Golden Camera award. Now, she's even been put into the running for the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize.

Greta Thunberg Speaks Out
Too many of us wait for someone else to put their head about the parapet, and speak out. Rather than hoping that someone else will do it, Greta Thunberg uses her own voice to make a difference. From her Stockholm TedX talk to her appearance at the United Nations Climate Action Summit in New York, including climate rallies, talks to the EU Parliament and her rousing address in Davos for the World Economic Forum along the way, this is a young woman who speaks passionately for what she believes in.

While to many of us want to help – want to change – but don't put ourselves out there, Greta Thunberg is showing the strength of speaking out. This may have been a journey that she began alone, but she clearly understands that it is only by working with others, and inspiring them through our actions and our words, that we can see the change we so desperately need.

Greta Thunberg Understands Our Climate Emergency
She may be young. But Greta Thunberg has a better understanding of our current situation, and greater clarity on the peril our planet is in, than many much older individuals. In contrast to the mild declarations of many of the world's well-intentioned but ineffective politicians, she does not mince her words. This is an emergency. Our home is on fire. Yes, we do need to panic. Only be making a concerted and concentrated effort over the next few, brief years can be avoid outright global catastrophe. There is still time to pull back from the brink of outright disaster – but only with urgent action, right now.

Greta Thunberg Avoids Hypocrisy
Many merely bury their heads in the sand about the climate crisis, or justify their inaction and reluctance the change beneath excuses. How often have you heard someone talking about their desire to live more sustainably, and expressing shock and dismay over extreme weather events, or the planet burning, only to talk, almost in their next breath, about their vacation plans, and where they are jetting off to?

Even those working in sustainability often fly around the world to spread their agenda and make things happen – releasing huge quantities of greenhouse gases in the process. But rather than flying around the world to spread the word and promote climate action, Greta Thunberg sticks to her guns. Avoiding such hypocrisy, she takes a bus or train around Europe. She even travelled to the UN Summits in New York, on a two-week trip across the Atlantic, in a solar-powered, zero-carbon emissions yacht.

Many people around the world are fighting for humanity and the planet. But Greta Thunberg has done something that few of them have been able to do. She has created a narrative – told a story – and, crucially, become a major part of the change that she wishes to see. That change is most urgently needed, and Greta Thunberg is a major reason for the fact that more and more individuals are waking up to the reality of our situation and joining the fight. Will you step up and join them?
