Embrace Plastic-Free July: Zero Waste Traveling and Camping Tips

The importance and history of Plastic Free July

plastic free july

The ‘Plastic Free July’ initiative was founded in 2011 by the Plastic Free Foundation, a non-profit organization based in Australia. The challenge started as a local event in Perth, but gained significant traction. It has since grown into a worldwide movement, inspiring millions of people (including ourselves!) to take action. The campaign works by challenging participants to avoid single-use plastic items for the entire month of July, and we’re totally here for it. This includes items like plastic bags, straws, water bottles, coffee cups, food packaging, and more. While Plastic Free July initially focused on a specific month, the movement has inspired many people to adopt plastic-free practices year-round, leading to lasting changes and a growing movement for sustainability!

How to Travel with Less Waste

In the spirit of Plastic-Free July, adopting eco-friendly practices while traveling and camping can make a significant difference. Here are some ways to do so!

How To Reduce Waste While Traveling?

Pack Reusable Essentials: Before setting off on your journey, make sure to pack reusable essentials such as a stainless steel water bottle, a reusable coffee cup, a set of bamboo or wheat straw cutlery, a reusable container or zip bag for leftovers and snacks, and a reusable bag for groceries or souvenirs. These items will help you avoid single-use plastic items and reduce waste while on the go.

Eco-Friendly Toiletries and Cleaning Essentials

Choose Eco-Friendly Toiletries and Cleaning Essentials: Swap out your conventional toiletries for eco-friendly and waterless alternatives.  Stay fresh with solid shampoo, conditioner, and soap bars in your toiletry bag. Keep your reusables polished with a zero-waste dish bar so you can continue to reuse your bottles, cups, cutlery and containers for the duration of your trip.  For longer trips, think about packing waterless Net Zero Strips. They’re light and compact and make it easy to freshen up clothes in your sink. Not only will these small changes significantly reduce the amount of plastic waste generated during your travels, but they’ll also get you past TSA without worrying about their limit for liquids.

Prepare Your Own Meals: One of the best ways to avoid plastic packaging and reduce waste is by preparing your meals. Pack a reusable container or zip bag for snacks and sandwiches, and opt for locally grown fresh fruits and vegetables that don't require additional packaging. Food and drinks that need to stay cool can be stored in an insulated lunch bag. If you're camping, consider bringing a portable stove and cookware to prepare warm and delicious meals while enjoying the great outdoors.

Choose Sustainable Accommodation: When booking accommodation, prioritize eco-friendly and sustainable options. Look for hotels or campsites that promote sustainable practices, such as recycling programs, renewable energy sources, and minimal use of single-use plastics. By supporting these establishments, you encourage others to follow suit and contribute to a more sustainable tourism industry.

Practice Leave No Trace Principles: Whether hiking, camping, or exploring natural areas, it's crucial to follow ‘Leave No Trace’ principles. This means respecting the environment by packing out all your waste, disposing of it properly, and leaving the area as beautiful as you found it. Avoid leaving behind any litter, including plastic wrappers or containers.
Embracing a plastic-free lifestyle during July, especially while traveling or camping, is an opportunity to make a positive impact on our environment. By implementing these zero waste tips and adopting sustainable practices, you'll not only enjoy an eco-friendly journey but also inspire others to do the same. Every small action counts, and together we can create a difference for a cleaner and healthier planet.
